iCaching App Reviews

Better and better… and better

The API support of this new version is great and establishes iCaching as a real alternative to GSAK. Way better than GSAK from the ergonomic standpoint, Im determined to to use it regularly and keep GSAK for the badges and statistics only. Still, and Im sure Im not the only one wishing this, being able to download spoiler images and transfer them in one go with the cache details to the GPSr would be a killer feature! No one else does this simply at present time. Another app called iSpoiler does the downloading, maybe you guys could get together ;) Anyway very happy to see this app getting better and better. Keep up the good work! ——— GC = Mirage Breton

Dont, just dont

Good Replacement for GSAK

When I was a PC user I liked and used GSAK. However since switching to a Mac several years ago I haven’t been satisfied with the work around - namely installing Parallels and Windows 7 and running GSAK in windows. A huge waste of precious MacBook Air SSD space. I did a search today and saw that Clyde (from GSAK) was recommending this app for Mac users. The price is reasonable for the capabilites of the app and you are able to accomplish a lot with filters. As a Premium Member, I particularily like the API link so that I can download caches directly from GS, bypassing Pocket Queries. I had a couple of questions that were not answered in the FAQ, but received a reply within a few hours. Excellent customer service.

Looks Promising, Still Crashes FAR Too Often

While looking over the Geocaching website, I came across a mention of this application. I currently use GSAK running on Vista in Parallels and it works fantastically there, but I still would like to have something that runs natively on MacOS, so I gave this a download. The Good: The app looks clean and has many filters to sort through the cache information you wish to view. I enjoy the map tool utilized by the app. API works pretty much as I would expect. Wishlist: When I have one cache selected, I expect to see some sort of map with some sort of icon (preferably the official Geocaching icon) demonstrating where that cache is located in the world in the bottom half of the screen. That map should also have “satellite” view and be zommable. Instead, I have an awkward notepad thingy where I’d prefer said map. Makes me think the map isn’t loading properly for some reason. Also, there needs to be a Filter option for “Owner DOES NOT equal <cacher name>” in order to effectively sort out one’s own geocaches. If it is there somewhere, I’ve yet to find it. The Bad: The application crashes FAR too often for me to trust it fully with my data. I find the bulk of my crashes during the imports of Pocket Queries where the app just doesn’t seem to like loading some of the waypont files of a zip file for some reason. Since I typically load 20 or so PQs at a time, I constantly find myself reloading all PQs in a folder since I have no idea which PQ the app loaded successfully and which one crashed the program. There doesn’t seem to be any discernable rationale behind the crashing either, so it becomes a frustrating and time-consuming process of constantly reloading PQs and crossing my fingers in the hopes that the app catches them all successfully. Overall, a nice start. I recognize it’ll take time to be mentioned in the same breath as other geocaching related software kits, so I’ll keep updating the app as it comes along to see the progress. Buyers should also keep this in mind when looking to pay for the product since it seems to be a bit temperamental at this point in the game.

Still crashes

I can not Export to file or GPS. It crashes half way thru exporting.

Excellent Support!

I had problems with the new upgrade and contacted support. They were quick to send a solution and guide me through the steps to make the fix. This program makes so sense for the Geocaching Mac User - easy to use, helps with planning caching trips and I like how it communicates with the Geocaching API. Thanks so much!

overall, best geocaching app for the mac

This app has a few shortcomings, such as: - separate popup appears to display the hint; why not have that on a separate tab or show inline within the info tab when a button is pressed? - interface to change location is a little clunky - wish there was a way to download content while at home (geocaching page/maps) so when Im on the road with the laptop it will display the info rather than say connection not found Ive tried four other apps to manage geocaches in OSX and this, by far, is the best. It has worked great with a Garmin GPSMap 60csx.

I like what I see.

I think your off to a great start. I think your the only one in the mac arena as far as geocaching programs, as I see other programmers havent update anything as of lately when it comes to the mac. I like to run some ideas by you. Here is my list. 1. Jump on the API wagon with geocaching, lots of features to come. iCloud is also coming out soon. 2. The selected folder needs to display some stats or status bar about the caches in the folder. (Founds, Not Found, Placed, Disabled/Archived.) Very helpful. One click filters for the folder stats as well. 3. Lots of room for more customizing the toolbar with buttons. The Search button should probably be renamed to Query or Filter. Also need saved settings in several areas. 4. Lots of room for more Column names, Last 4 logs, Found % based on logs to weed out DNF caches. I think the map is cool with the latest update.

improving app

I reviewed a previous version of this app and consider this version an improvement over the last. New use features include: - Import cache files by drag-and-drop - View a map display of caches - pan the map to your home location or an active cache

Very useful!

This is a great program! It works as expected. My only complaint is that there are no "Smart" folders or "veiw all options.

A lot of potential

Im liking the looks of this app! Its pretty good for managing caches, and has a lot of potentail to do more. The mapping could be a lot more sophisticated than it is. I too would like to see some sort of alternate icon for "unknowns" that have been given real coordinates. Ive solved a lot of puzzles that I havent had a chance to go find yet and am now having a hard time keeping track of which are solved and which arent! I would also like to see some sort of route planning thing incorporated into the map, to plan out caching trips. And also on the map, a unique icon for "finds" would be really nice.

USELESS

Completely worthless. Importing the caches is difficult at times impossible. Cant print a decent list Gotta go through five steps just to do one thing. worst $15.00 dollars I have spent. I hate writing reviews but I am so frustrated with this program I feel like I have to.

like it overall

Overall I really like the new version! (the old one did nothing for me to be honest) This is fast and easy to use and I love being able to download my PQs straight from the web. The only thing I havent worked around is a way to get the difficulty/terrain rating, size, type, and hints to go to my GPS. (I have an old GPSMap 76CSx which will display notes but the long name shows up there instead). If there was a way to get at least the d/t and size/type into my note fields then Id not look for anything else! Hints would be a bonus! :)

Great APP!!

I really like this APP. I am having trouble getting the smart folders to work in this new version, still by far the best app for Mac users!!!! Thanks for all the hard work. A few future improvements could go as follows. 1. Allow users to be able to track how many "stars" they have collected on a certain day (ie. I found 30 caches today and each was a 1/1 so I received 60 stars) 2. Be able to view the county in which a cache is in 3. Look into some of the macros that GSAK has and this might be helpful for some updates. Really great app. I recommend it to all Mac users

A very useful app with great potential.

Howdy, I recently started using iCaching since the other two applications Ive been using have either not been updated and dont appear to be supported or are not really designed for geocaching. Nicely enough iCaching actually combines many of the nice features of each of those apps (one more of a database application the other more of a graphical application) into one. In addition, while there seem to be a few rough edges, the author of iCaching is listening for comments and is working at adding those features. All in all a welcome and useful addition to my repetoire of geocahing applications. Good Luck, herbs2

Almost!

This is almost the perfect application for geocaching. It needs to support more gps recievers in order for it to be a complete app! I should be able to export to my magellan. Why wouldnt that be available? Only two types of receivers can actually send straight to the gps and I think that it is something that I will have to deal with right now, but I think that I should be able to send the gpx files to a magellan. I mean, it is a popular brand.

Geocache loading

This works great with my DeLorme PN-30. I wanted to also load them into my Nuvi 1450. I could not get them in so I wrote the author. Imagine, he wrote me back the same day and using his suggestions, I am now able to do so. He informed me that he is working on improvements and gladly welcomes questions and suggestions!

Nice Features & Great Customer Support

I recently converted to a Mac from Windows and was so upset when I learned that GSAK wasnt Mac compatible. Then I found iCaching. I found it easier to use than GSAK and whenever I had a problem, the developer answered it within a day via email with a suggestion. It is true what another reviewer said. . .the developer really seems to care about the program and helping customers. Im so glad I found this program and like that I can swap gpx files back and forth with GSAK users in my geocaching group.

Its Great

I am a premium geocache member and have used GSAK on a PC for 5+ years. I recently stumbled across iCaching and thought Id give it a try since Im trying to do more things on my iMac (the PCs my wifes). With all the geocaches around us, you need some sort of a tool to filter out the caches you would like to look for. This tool does just what you need. 1- Easy download of PQ from geocaching.gom 2- Smart folders (filters) to narrow down what you would like to look for. 3- Info/Description/Geocache page/Maps to fine tune your selection 4- Upload selected information to your GPS and other devices If you are serious about geocaching, this tool is great.
